Are you using the right fabric?

This is quite an important question to ask and might not be looked at often enough.

Fabric choice is important. Choosing the right fabric can help to optimise your laminate properties. This includes weight, thickness, strength, stiffness and also cost. There are hundreds of Composite reinforcement fabrics available. Each is specifically designed to achieve a certain outcome for your laminate. Most use standard E-glass grade fibreglass, simply because of its great properties and low cost. As a manufacturer, we have made hundreds or variations of fibreglass alone. This is not including other available fibres such as Aramid (Kevlar), Carbon Fibre, Innegra and Basalt.

Not using the right fabric for your laminate can result in a number of unwanted results. A common result is a resin rich laminate. Resin rich laminates are caused by an unbalanced resin / fibre ratio. This can lead to unnecessary weight in your laminate as well as extra cost. Further issues include structural compromise and extended processing time.

So, how do you know what’s best?
